Dave Bautista survives his first MMA fight


PROVIDENCE – It’s two minutes before 11 p.m. and Dave Bausita looks mean – all 6-foot-6, 265 pounds of him.

Tattoos cover his arms and back as he screams on the way to the cage to make his MMA debut. The 43-year-old is know from his days in the WWE, but tonight the blows would be “real.” Standing across the cage from Bautista was the 300 pound Vince Lucero (20-22).

The night, CESMMA’s Real Pain, was sponsored by the next movie Bautista is in, apply titled “The Man With The Iron Fists”. And as we would have it, Bautista stopped Lucero with his gigantic fists, to earn his first MMA win.

“I think my nerves got the best of me a little bit,” said Bautista. “I want to fight again for sure. I wanted to get this first one out of the way I’m better than I showed tonight.”

Lucero attacked from the start of the bell, hitting Bautista with multiple shots before pressing him up against the cage. Bautista looked buckled, at first. The separate and both fighters traded blows. Lucero pressed Bautista up against the cage, but Bautista reversed the position. The separated and threw some sloppy punches before clinching again.

Lucero started waving to the crowd and got cocky. The fighters separated and Bautista shot in and took his opponent to the ground. Lucero gave up his back and Bautista delivered a couple blows. Lucero laid flat on his back as Bautista punched away and the referee stopped the fight at 4:05 in the opening round…

John “Doomsday” Howard stayed undefeated since his UFC release with a brutal TKO victory over Brett Chism.

Though the first round was close – both fighters got takedowns and landed shots – the second frame was all Howard. The Dorchester native started peppering the taller Chism with punches. As Chism backed into the cage, Howard took him down. By the time Chism hit the ground his right eye was swollen shut. There the 29-year-old unleashed a furry of ground and pound. Howard propped himself up and landed blow-after-blow, until the referee stopped the fight at 3:31.

The win is Howard’s fourth in a row…

UFC veteran David Loiseau made quick work of Chris McNally, opening up his opponent with a brutal elbow. Blood start to stream down McNally’s face and the doctor called the fight off.

“The people asked for the elbows. So I brought the people’s elbows back,” Loiseau said in his post-fight interview.

In other action, Ultimate Fighter veteran Greg Rebello, from Bourne, got back on track submitting Chris Guillen via rear-naked choke in the first round. Providence’s own Luis Felix upset TUF veteran Marc Stevens by decision. Heavyweight and former NFL defensive end Tyler King, from North Attleboro, grinded out a decision over Josh Diekmann. Methuen’s Calvin Kattar earned one of the biggest wins in his career controlling Saul Almeida and earning a unanimous decision. Chandler Holderness shocked the local crowd defeating Todd Chattelle, from Pawtucket, R.I., via TKO in just :27.
